Francis Borgia

Francis Borgia
(1510–72)
   Saint, Missionary and Educator.
Francis was the great-grandson of Pope alexander vi and the son of the Duke of Gandia. Although he was drawn to the religious life from an early age, he married and had eight children. During this period, he served as viceroy of Catalonia and did much to combat administrative corruption.
On his wife’s death, he was privately received into the Jesuit Order and was ordained as a priest in 1551. He was a friend of both St teresa of avila and St ignatius loyola. In 1554 he became Commissary General of the order in both Spain and Portugal and became responsible for the supervision of the Society’s work overseas. He established many schools and colleges and was involved in the foundation of the Collegium Romanum. Then, in 1565, on the death of James Laynez, he was elected the third General of the order. An outstanding administrator, he was canonised less than a hundred years after his death.
